Day 9 update 1

Went to a local pub last night.  Alaska doesn’t mess around with their beer gravities, they start at 6abv, and go up from there.   Shout out to Brad, and wish him luck on his house and pending move to Idaho.  He’s in love 🙂

Today’s plans are to visit Sublime line ink, and see about my tattoo.  Still a tad unsure about placement but I guess we’ll figure it out.

Went to the university yesterday, and learned about Alaska’s volcanoes.  Ummmmm yes they have active volcanoes here.  Who knew.  I also saw the VP of BP’s house that he rarely visits, damn what a view he’s got of Denali (mountain)

20151023 Day 7

I stayed at the Westmark hotel in Whitehorse.  It was a much much larger town than I’d expected.  Shout out to Paul for some information related to the area.  He’s a cook at Westmark, born and raised in Whitehorse.  Joanne was a wonderful hostess, and made sure my thirst was quenched.  Hope to see ya’ll again in 9ish days.

The drive, I’ll again have to default to the video (uploading slowly now) was absolutely beautiful.  The mountains prior to Destruction Bay were just magnificent to the point I actually cried a bit *shaddap*  The roads were all paved, but you really couldn’t tell for a couple hours of the trip.

Customs was a whopping 2 minutes at most.  The only real issue was when asked, “How long were you in Canada?”  Ummmmmmm, he was kind enough, as I tried counting back the days, to adjust the question, “more than a week?”  No sir…..  I barely know what day it is these days, just the date from labeling my videos…

I arrived in Fairbanks ~4p AST (Alaska Standard Time GMT -8)  I’m still in a little disbelief that I’m in Alaska, and I DROVE here heh.  There is a rating for the level of activeness/visibility of the Northern Lights, scale of 1-9.  We’re sitting at a 3 for most of my time here, with the exception of a 4 when we’re planning to head to Prudhoe Bay, which should be amazing!  The difference between 3 and 4 is significant enough apparently to make me quite excited.

I’ll update again later today, and introduce my friends up here (the Woods), and their wonderful Spruce built, loggish house!

I love West Coast Mountains. They are younger, bigger, more rough around the edges. Covered or not, they are just out there in all their glory. Yes, I’m still talking about mountains

20151022 Day 6

Last night I stayed at the first and oldest (obviously) hotel in Fort Nelson.  I was built in the 50’s and had a motel add-on completed in 19080’s.  I stayed in the hotel portion.  Place looked like it’s age, but had an indoor pool in the center with Tiki heads everywhere, and a hut for karaoke.  I wandered over to the pub next door, but same building and began dumping my camera data.  I had a goal of staying up till midnight to acclimate myself to PST…  I chatted up the local color, and ran the pool table for bets of karaoke at the bar.  Thank goodness I never lost!!!!  Shout out (hola hola) to Georgeet, (owner/manager) and Ivan (bartender). Bed was 0100…. Needless to say, I checked out and was on the road by 0741PST.  Needless to say I set the camera’s and was out.  Bout 50km in I looked down and hadn’t refueled before leaving….  PPP for sure, and was coasting down most of the mountains in the Northern Rockies, trying to make it to the next station.  I’m carrying 5 gallons or 19 liters, of gas in the trunk, but really didn’t want to have to say I _had_ to use it.  I saw a sign that said “Sheep crossing” and 300 meters later, there were 2 ram/goat looking animals that were eating what little grass there was on the opposite side pull off.  I slowed down enough to watch them run and climb the mountain (which they did very easily) but couldn’t stop for a pic as I was mid coast and running on fumes.  I found a random little pit stop, and actually got some 92 octane (not cheap!)  I thanked the dood profusely for being around.  Never again… filling up at 1/2 talk regardless if it’s available!

BC, I’ve heard about their “winter highway” which is 2 side by side paths for snowmobiles, and ATV’s…  there were Miles or KM of the tracks!

As I traveled, I ran into prolly the most sketchy construction zone I’ve ever seen….  “Wait for pilot car”  ummm…   Thats new!  The sign said 20 minutes, but luckily I caught it fairly quickly.

Driving thru the Yukon, was the most beautiful place I’ve ever seen.  The video was been slowed to 10fps as opposed to 15fps as I’ve been doing to get a little better view.  I’ll be shooting 5sec shots on the way back!  I’ll let the video say what I can’t express….. If I had to turn around and head home tomorrow I would still be happy!

Oddly enough, the most cars, not {x,S}UV/Trucks, I’ve seen are all VW’s.. prolly for the TDI milage/kClicks (the locals tell me)

20151021 Day 5

Into PST we go

Special thanks to the Coopers for the hospitality.  Good food, better friends, and the best neck/back massage from Karin (it’s her profession).  Such beautiful children, and I can’t wait to hang more with ya’ll.

I couldn’t have felt better today.  I was relaxed, and incredibly happy to be on the open road, and just didn’t give a F about much other than enjoying the drive.  Easiest 10 hours I’ve ever done.

As I remember it all:

First, Canada is a little more advanced than the US, and pretty much only take debit cards with chips, and said chip must be used.  When paying at the pump you allow them to charge the max, between 150-200 dollars, and are then reimbursed after the merchant reports the actual charge.  There is a disclaimer, but until I looked at the 5+ charges, didn’t realize it took more than a day+.  ehhh that adds up when yer filling up ~3 or more times a day.

Post entering British Columbia, there was a pungent stench of oil refineries that lingered about as long as Welling’s farts.

The trees I’d mentioned in Alberta, that were only used for housing coverage, couldn’t be more plentiful here… Perhaps the most prevalent in fact.

The wind in Alberta as I drove thru was pretty intense.  Trees remained at about 15degrees from vertical most of the day.  In Fort St John, I actually grabbed a door handle once or twice while fueling as I was being moved around.  The trucks passing in the opposite direction were a straight elbow, push against the seat, and hold on kind of event.  The double spring’d construction signs were hitting the ground.  I swear my car was lifted off all 4 wheels and jumped 1″ over as one massive double wide truck passed me.

Interestingly enough, I would say a good 90% of the construction workers holding the stop/slow signs were women

As I got into the Northern Rockies, I passed an area labeled, “Wildfire area, enter at your own risk”  and the~5ish km of forest were quite obviously burned nearly to the ground.  The center part of the tree, core(?) mast (?) was still there but charred and nothing else.

Sorry for the late post, having breakfast and hitting the road this morning…..  Looks like a long one today despite the k-meterage(?)
